Having gone on other food tours, I had high hopes for this one. I'm a pretty adventurous eater and was very excited to try out these restaurants. However, the tour didn't get off to a great start. Our tickets told us to meet at a certain spot, which we did. We were a few minutes late (it read 10:42) but I would think they could wait for us. We were confused when no one else was around. The tour guide did call our cell phone to inform us that they had already departed and were at the first destination. When we finally made it to the first place, there was no explanation or apology on why the tour departed without us, which I found slightly annoying. At the end of the tour another participant said that she was glad left on time, but was sorry to hear it „was before we showed up„.
The food at the first place was good. It was a standard ethiopian breakfast and very filling. After we left that place, we went across the street for a traditional coffee ceremony. This restaurant was nice and had been decorated like an ethiopian home. The coffee ceremony is a lengthy process which was interested to watch. However, I found that while we were waiting for everything to be set up there was a serious lull in conversation and information giving from the tour guides. There were moments that we sat in complete silence which I found incredibly awkward. I expect a guide to be a host, and really do not like to start a conversation myself (I am very interesting though!!) The coffee was good and the appetizer we had was also tasty.
Next we stopped at an ethiopi music store. It was interesting to see both traditional and contemporary music videos. It was nice to also get a glimpse into that part of their culture and not just the food. I did not care for the music or the cd they gave to us for free. They can keep it
We walked to another restaurant for more food. I also found this place to be quite enjoyable. Plenty of different things were served and it was all very good.
We ended the tour eating dessert. I learned that any of their sweet desserts are all italian in origin. I was surprised to be eating tiramisu and biscotti, but they were delicious, and the chef and owner of the place was of course ethiopi as well.
Overall, I thought the food was pretty good, but I feel like we just paid $100 for us to eat three ethiopian meals. Why would I want three of them. I liked that the tour guides were pretty laid back and easy to talk to/with, but sometimes the lack of conversation lead me to believe that they were inexperienced and extremely unprofessional. I can't say that I would tell someone to go on this tour, however I would recommend some of the restaurants to someone looking for ethiopian in DC. |
