Capitol Hill Food Tour
The Capitol Hill Culinary Experience (Andrew Clark)

The food tour was everything i hoped it would be: great food, lots of walking through scenic neighborhoods, interesting history, and a knowledgeable and entertaining guide. We had a group of six friends, but also got to meet others in our 12 person party; large enough to be interesting, but small enough to keep it personal. Overall a really fun afternoon which i would highly recommend. Our tour guide was Andrew; he did a super job!

This is an activity that everyone should do. You acquire knowledge of the local area and get to experience cuisine from various cultures. Intermingle with the locals and learn how the city changed. View the town from the main and back streets as you learn the local history. This is a "MUST DO".

Such a fun and unique way to experience DC. We took the tour while on Spring Break with our 12, 16 and 17 year olds. They all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We loved walking through a part of DC we might not have seen otherwise, learning fun cultural tidbits along the way and eating foods from fantastic local restaurant owners. A great way to kick off our week! HIGHLY recommended!

We had a great experience. Our tour guide, Christian, was a certified city tour guide as well so his knowledge of the area was remarkable. The food was amazing and so much that we couldn't eat it all at each location. Some were full meals and some were samplings. I would highly recommend going on this food tour! 5 stars for sure!

I went on the tour with my mum. We weren't sure about the weather as it was cloudy rainy and chilly! We met everyone 15mins before the tour and were greeted by a very friendly Andrew. The tour started on time and Andrew explained why he would be on his phone sometimes and where we'd go before hand. The food was amazing. The walk was great, not too far between places. Andrew had great insight about the area. The group of people were great too. Despite the weather the Tour was fantastic and will definitely be doing another one soon!

The history we learned was just as good as the food we had to eat. The portions were very generous! I'd done a food tour in NYC and the portions were smaller so I was surprised by the amount of food we had! Come hungry!

Our guide was very knowledgeable of the area. As a local, I was surprised by how much I didn't know about D.C. We learned much about the historical activities of Capitol Hill!

I highly recommend this food tour of Capitol Hill. Our tour guide, Ryan, was energetic and engaging. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the area surrounding the delicious restaurants we stopped at. The weather was warm, but during the history part of the tour, Ryan thoughtfully stopped us in locations where we could take cover under some shade. We had an intimate group of 7 people due to some cancellations, and at each stop, Ryan made conversation with all of us easing the awkwardness of meeting new people. Now on to the food...we were stuffed!! Everything we ate was absolutely delicious. I do not want to give details and spoil the surprise, but I will say we enjoyed one restaurant so much, we returned for dinner that evening. Overall, I highly recommend this tour, even if you are a local! Thank you Ryan and DC Metro Food Tours for an enjoyable, delicious afternoon!

I've been on food tours in other cities (San Francisco and Pittsburgh) before, and this was the best one of the group! The restaurant choices were unique, the servings were satisfying (basically 2 1/2 meals, plus dessert), and the guide was friendly. It was a good balance of getting to know the neighborhood (in my case, the Eastern Market) and exploring history. A great way to spend an afternoon with family or friends.

P.S. Cava Mezze is AMAZING!

The walking tour and 2 of the restaurants (the first 2) were excellent and fun. Our tour leader was enthusiastic and very informative about the area. The first 2 restaurants served a variety of dishes, very nicely appointed and delicious. The third restaurant served one dish only and was disappointing after the generous fare of the previous two. On the other hand, we were getting full so the small offering was probably not a bad idea. I didn't care for this last dish, either, but my 2 teenage grandsons like it a lot. The 4th food stop was totally disappointing. I expected pastries and an opportunity to enjoy them with a cup of coffee, even though the tour guide explained that he was going to the bakery in the Eastern Market to pick up a bag of pastries which he would distribute. The pastries were stale, to boot. But, the over all tour was so enjoyable and the first 2 restaurants so outstanding I do not want to leave the reader with the impression that I was unhappy. It is a worthwhile tour.

The capital hill tour was fantastic. it was the perfect amount of time approximately 3 hours we were definitely full and satisfied after we left. It is definitely worth the money for the amount of food and socializing and history. Our guide today excellent job of making sure that everyone at the table was included in conversation and that all of our questions were answered. I would highly recommend this as a way to combine walking, history and delicious cuisine. as a side note you can order alcoholic beverages at the restaurants that you visit as long as you pay for them. The tables and food were instantly ready for us at each location.

Our party of three adults very much enjoyed the Capitol Hill food tour. This tour centered around restaurants along Barracks Row and ventured a few blocks into the neighborhoods to point out historical and architectural interests. Our guide, Chris, was very enthusiastic and informative. The food served was very good, but the service at each establishment varied from friendly and attentive to abrupt and almost non-existent. In any case, the tour is really about the host and his ability to entertain and inform and in that regard this tour was excellent.

This tour took us to four restaurants around the Capital Hill district of Washington. Although the area is pretty, we walked up and down the same couple of streets as time wasters between each restaurant, with nothing of much cultural or historical significance to be seen. It would have been interesting to go to the market at least...

The restaurants were frankly average to poor. We have done many food tours and usually you get to either taste typically "local" cuisine (eg pizza in Brroklyn) or the best that somewhere has to offer. The first restaurant was Indian, which was the best of the bunch. Greek, salvadorean and American dessert (bread pudding) were the rest and we wouldn't go back to any of them.

I think this tour needs to include a small bus and take visitors further afield to make the event more interesting. We have done Brooklyn and NYC tours in this manner and they worked well. All in all, we thought it was poor and not good value for money.

I thought it was really well put together and I liked the combination between the discussion about food as well as the history of the neighborhood. Unfortunately my family had already been to one of the restaurants on the list (Cava in Capitol Hill) and I had requested beforehand that we didn't revisit this place as we preferred to try something new but for some reason this message must have gotten lost in communication. Everything else was wonderful!

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, but by the end of the tour that was supposed to end at approximately 5PM she drew out the presentation until almost 6PM. Most of our group was exhausted froma lot of walking on a very hot day, and by the time we reached Eastern Market most of the booths inside and outside were shutting down. I think just tightening up the itinerary time wise would have made a big difference.

Rachel was a really good guide. The "tour" itself was a little contrived since all the places to eat are kind of on the same street, so you walk off for a while, then come back. The first tour stop was nothing exciting, and I thought it was going to be a dud. However, walking the neighborhood was interesting in itself even if no one exciting has ever lived there. The commandant house and Marine base was the most interesting. Other than that, the tour is just a nice walk in the neighborhoods. Luckily for us that wasn't a big deal since it was a nice day and a part of DC that we had never seen. The food stops were really good - lots of food and a nice variety. Our tour group wasn't particularly chatty, so there was some awkwardness when we were seated before the food arrived. We had our adult children with us, and most of the group was mid-50s and didn't really interact with them. It would have helped to have some introductions early in the tour just to break the ice. Overall, we recommend this for those who want to experience DC beyond the Mall if you have an afternoon to kill.

Eric was a great tour guide! The architectural history was fascinating and the food in Capitol Hill was delicious. It was a perfect afternoon activity for us as residents and our parents who have been to DC many times and wanted to try something new.

This was a third food tour with DC Food Tours (Old Towne, U Street and Capitol Hill). While all three were great, its a very close call between Old Towne and Captiol Hill and highly recommend both.

Most of the food was also excellent - good variety of cuisines, and adequate portions. Dessert was least desirable. Will definitely look into other tours in the future.

This tour was a gift for a visit to DC, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But it was wonderful. Our tour guide Eric was very well informed about the history of the Capitol Hill neighborhood. He was extremely well organized, friendly, and the food stops were well spaced and offered a variety of tastes (Indian, Greek, El Salvadorean and American) plus the servings were quite generous. Our group was friendly so it was easy to make conversation during our food tastings. Just an all around great idea for anyone visiting from out of town, or a native looking for something different. I would recommend this tour, and Eric, to everyone. My only caveat would be, although it wasn't a long distance to walk, if a person had a disability or a joint issue, it might not be comfortable for them. Also, most all of our stops were not accessible for someone using a wheelchair or walker. But anyone who had concerns could call ahead to see if modifications could be made.

our guide (Christian) was delightful and personable. the timing was right. the tour of old buildings was great. if anything, we would have willingly paid more for an upgrade in menu and would have liked a behind-the-scenes look into the restaurant kitchen. we will certainly take another similar tour in the area/ thanks

Our guide was so intelligent and informed, she gave a great description and overview of the history of food in the eastern market and the development of the region's cultural diffusion. The food was delicious overall, with a great mix of types and styles.

We very much enjoyed the capitol hill food tour. Never having been on a food tour, we didn't know exactly what to expect. But our guide was fantastic - very professional and clearly experienced - and the stops along the tour were great. The landmarks were interesting and the restaurants and food were great! Also, I had a minor issue (my fault) when I purchased my tickets initially, but The Food Tour operator gave the issue personal attention and helped me work it our with the Seller, Zerve. Highly recommended all around!

Our guide was both knowledgeable and dynamic.

He enthusiastically delivered a most comprehensive combination of history, architecture, neighborhood culture, and food tastings.

The range of cuisine was excellent, and the servings were most generous.

I most heartily recommend this tour.

I plan on checking out some of the other tours offered by DC Metro Food Tours during my future DC visits.

We lucked out and had a two person total tour. Our guide was knowledgeable about the local area and even made useful food recommendations off the tour-path (BL I learned about the area and didnt feel like I was getting 'sold' places to eat). You dont cover a ton of ground but the path keeps you from noticing or caring much. All in all a great tour. Come hungry!

My girlfriend and I signed up for the Capitol Hill Culinary Experience. As you can see by the rating, this was a total success from top to bottom. Our tour struck the right balance of fun/educational without turning into a grind. Here are the details.

The tour consists of 4 restaurants in the Cap Hill area. The restaurants are all within 1/2 a mile of each other. In total, we walked a bit over a mile. Our restaurants were:

1. Capitol Hill Tandoor & Grill - Anglo-Indian fair. Food 3.5/5

2. Cave Mezze DC - Greek. Food 4/5

3. Las Placitas - El Salvadorian. Food 2/5

4. Zest Bistro - quick dessert, bread pudding 4/5

I do not mean to review these restaurants because this was just a sampling of what the establishments had to offer. Plus, we are not ordering our own food. The fair is chosen beforehand to facilitate a quick and efficient encounter. The portions were surprisingly hearty considering we had 4 on the agenda. I was approaching full by the end of #2. It's important to pace yourself on this tour.

Tour Guide: Andrew - enthusiastic, well-spoken, informed, upbeat, approachable foodie. He did a great job guiding 11 people to 4 restaurants in 3.5 hours. Totally worth the money. We've done 2 free tours by foot, and the quality of the tour guide went up substantially on this tour.

Anyway, we were guided through a tour of the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The tour was a nice pace and packed with entertaining and informative pearls of knowledge. The tour is smartly organized. They don't try and cover too much ground. They do a lot with the square footage the company decided to cover. As mentioned, it found a nice balance between fun, educational and exertion.

I fully recommend this tour. The food might not blow you away, but it was a fun and diverse experience peppered with history and interesting information about the neighborhood.

I flew in from Chicago to celebrate my bachelorette party with one of my bridesmaids, and this was the activity we'd planned to really "live it up!" for the weekend I was there. And we did! We met our tour guide, Jen, and a handful of other people (locals and tourists) at the Eastern Market Metro Station. Jen sent out a text message about half an hour before the tour, letting us know where she would be and what she was wearing, to make her easy to spot! From there, Jen took us not only on a food tour, but a HISTORY tour. We got to see gorgeous mansions, beautiful row homes, even homes some political and local celebrities lived in! And along the way, we were fed at different restaurants. Do not eat before this tour. I repeat, do NOT eat before this tour. The DC food tours aren't like other cities - where you're given a tiny sip of soup or a small piece of pizza. Nope, on the DC tour, you get FULL meals at every stop. That could mean soup, salad, and an entree, or family-style passed dishes- there were about 7 dishes at one of our stops! You won't need breakfast the next morning either. Every penny you spend on this tour is WORTH IT. And Jen is soooo knowledgeable -she was an absolute blast to learn from! One of the places was Indian food. I'd never had Indian food before, and Jen did a great job of explaining what the different dishes were, how spicy they were, etc. She even pointed out other restaurants along our route that we all might like to try someday. I've been going to DC once a year since about 2008, and this was the BEST thing I've done there so far, hands down. If you're a tourist, put this on your list. If you're local, like my friend was, put this on your list. It'll give you TONS of new places to try!

Overall, the tour was good. There was plenty of food served at each of the locations and the tour guide did a good job of providing some history of the area. I wish that they has stopped at more restaurants (only stopped at four places) instead of having multiple selections from one restaurant. Also, the food served at the restaurants was ok, not great.

The food was good, but our tour guide, Jen Ho, was absolutely fantastic. Her in-depth knowledge about the history and architecture was amazing. I could have listened to her talk all day! This was our 3rd food tour, and I highly recommend it. Not only do you try restaurants you might otherwise pass by, but it's such a great opportunity to learn more about how various areas are created throughout history. Loved it!
