We took the U Street tour with Justin and he was fantastic! He lives in the neighborhood and knew all kinds of cool facts. I would take this same tour over and over. And the food was wonderful!

Justin was kind, intelligible, and personable on this tour. He went above and beyond what a good food tour entails by providing rich history on the area that even as a local I did not know.

Enjoyable tour....Tour guide was informed and we just "experienced" the neighborhood.

Tour is somewhat Afro-American centric regarding the history with gentrification in full swing, it won't make you think of Harlem. The couple that went with daughter and me also helped make the trip enjoyable.

I found the tour to be incredibly informative and interesting. My only concerns was with the actual food. While I understand that the cuisine was based around soul food, I found too much of it to be deep fried and very heavy. Which is disappointing because I expected there to be more of a range of foods, like jerk spices and Caribbean soul food as well.

Our guide Chris was great! Being from DC he gave good inside information in addition to rich history. Everywhere we stopped had something different and gave me a good idea of DC's culture.

My husband and I decided to go on this tour after missing out on scheduling the Georgetown tour. It was our anniversary weekend and we took another couple along with us. We met our guide, Leah, at the Metro station and there was another couple as well as two other sets of people from out of town. Leah was VERY enthusiastic about her neighborhood, and she shared a lot of information about the culture of the community. You will find that the U Street area has a very eclectic group of people. I thought the food was okay. We were able to experience some places that I would not have visited on my own. We actually got the best service at Eatonville. They treated us like welcomed guests. We also got good service at 1905 as our last stop. The food was good at Marvin, but we had very unfortunate treatment from the workers there. Leah handled it well. We had a good time regardless, but I would have to say that I enjoyed the Old Town Alexandria tour better.

We did the Historic U Street Food Tour this past weekend and it was fabulous! Our tour guide, Chris, was a renaissance man. He did a wonderful tour and was a lot of fun. I was amazed at how many different topics he could intelligently speak on. We had lots of questions and he was able to answer them all.

The food was FANTASTIC! Eat location gave us more food than expected. We definitely didn't need to eat anything for the rest of the day.

My daughter was visiting from Seattle and this was one of the highlights of the many things we did while she was here. Chris was very personable, funny and knowledgeable about the U Street history. It was a nice mix of different cuisines and atmospheres.

I would definitely do this tour again but only if Chris was the tour guide :) I am spreading the news that this is one hidden treasure in DC that must be experienced.

Myself and a female friend of mine decided to do the U Street Food Tour (there are many and we chose this one first through a random drawing) last weekend. When we showed up at the designated meeting place we had to wait around for a few minutes with another couple we deduced were there for the same reason. Our Guide, Christopher, showed up and was a very pleasant and engaging individual. The weather said clear skies, but it started POURING down rain right as we stopped. Christopher was kind enough to loan my lady friend his umbrella, which meant that he would get wet, but he insisted.

Anyway, our first stop was at Ooohs and Ahhs, a Southern Soul Food restaurant. Having grown up in Arkansas and Memphis, I was quite pleased with the food. Typical sides of collared greens, mashed sweet potatos, potato salad, green beans and cheese and macaroni with a main dish of fried catfish and sweet tea. It met my expectations of being "as good as my Granny's" so high praise indeed. We then walked to Eatonville for some delicious gumbo and stuffed hushpuppies. Along the way Chris expounded on the local culture and history by pointing out various landmarks and answering our questions. He was a charming young man, D.C. born and raised, and he was not only very knowledgeable about the area but displayed a true sense of pride in his work and was genuinely proud of his town and wanted to show it off to others.

We then went to another establishment and had braised ribs, chesesy potatos and cake. Our final destination was a bar/restaurant called 1805 in the heart of Little Ethiopia where we had pork belly (like a REALLY thick chunk of bacon for those of you non Southerners) and mashed potatos. For desert we had some time of frozen banana creme concoction that was very good (provided you like banannas) and a sort of chocolate sauce stuffed cupcake.

Overall the expeirience was really fun and I would reccomend it to anybody who is a fan of good food, good history, or good times. That should be pretty much the worlds population. We have already decided to sign up and do another food tour and are looking forward to it.

I went on this tour with a group of girls for a friend's bachelorette party. We had a great time. The tour guide was very informative and shared a lot of facts about the history of the area and gave his insight on his favorite restaurants around U Street and throughout the city. All of the food was delicious and encompassed a wide spectrum of options. I was most impressed with how accommodating the restaurants were with our various dietary needs. Out of our group, there were vegetarians and those that only ate certain types of meat/fish and each restaurant was able to accommodate these needs easily and without complaint. I was very impressed with everything about the tour. I am looking forward to doing another one in the future. And, we were stuffed! We didn't need to eat anything else for the rest of the night!

I liked the tour, but wanted more of a historical and cultural context. I've done two others with much more detailed information. Given the area and the state of affairs now this tour could be designed to spur fantastic conversations and thoughts.

We did enjoy our very knowledgeable tour guide.

There are three things that I believe makes a food tour great, the food, the tour guide, and the narrated history of the area where the tour is occuring. The U street food tour is almost five stars!

1. Three of the four restaurants we visited were amazing - the blackened catfish, collard greens, and mac and cheese was phenomenal, as was the gumbo and rock shimp in hushpuppies, and the lobsterball and breadpudding. The beer served at our third location was an added plus! However, the Oxtail and Chicken Curry we were served was okay, nothing special.

2. Chris, our tour guide, was great! He was very knowledgable about the food we were eating and the African/American history of U Street. In addition, he gave us great recommendations for Jazz clubs at the end of the tour.

3. During the tour we learned a mix of African/American history in DC, as well as some general DC history. As U street was one of the better known areas for jazz before Harlem, it would have been great to hear a little more about the jazz history of the area, and perhaps integrate a restaurant into the tour that has a live jazz band.

All around, this was a wonderful experience, one that my boyfriend and I will not forget!

The history of the area was very informative, I learned so much about the great influence African Americans had on U Street. A must tour to get the flavor of the neighbor and to experience something new.

Every restaurant we stopped at had delicious food and two places had very creative dishes with the exception of the trinidad and tobago restaurant. The food was not very tasty and seemed to just be thrown together. I guess being from the islands, I know what good Caribbean food taste like and that place was not it.
