There are three things that I believe makes a food tour great, the food, the tour guide, and the narrated history of the area where the tour is occuring. The U street food tour is almost five stars!
1. Three of the four restaurants we visited were amazing - the blackened catfish, collard greens, and mac and cheese was phenomenal, as was the gumbo and rock shimp in hushpuppies, and the lobsterball and breadpudding. The beer served at our third location was an added plus! However, the Oxtail and Chicken Curry we were served was okay, nothing special.
2. Chris, our tour guide, was great! He was very knowledgable about the food we were eating and the African/American history of U Street. In addition, he gave us great recommendations for Jazz clubs at the end of the tour.
3. During the tour we learned a mix of African/American history in DC, as well as some general DC history. As U street was one of the better known areas for jazz before Harlem, it would have been great to hear a little more about the jazz history of the area, and perhaps integrate a restaurant into the tour that has a live jazz band.
All around, this was a wonderful experience, one that my boyfriend and I will not forget! |
